William Ruto sworn in as fifth President of Kenya

Kenya’s new president Willian Samoei Ruto sworn in on Tuesday, a week after the Supreme Court upheld an election that dashed the political hopes of the nation's veteran politician, Raila Odinga.

Ruto along with his Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, took the oath of office in front of cheering crowds at Kasarani Stadium in the capital, Nairobi.

Approximately 20 heads of state have attended Ruto's inauguration at the 60,000-seat Kasarani stadium, which was already packed with spectators before dawn, many of whom are dressed in the bright yellow of Ruto's party and waving Kenyan flags.

Dr. Ruto, who has served as Deputy President for the past decade, takes over at a time when food and fuel prices are skyrocketing, unemployment is high, and the national debt is rising.
